What is Root Canal Treatment?
A root canal treatment involves tooth disinfection and the removal of all debris (nerve tissue, lymph tissue, blood tissue, bacteria and infection) from the coronal pulp chamber and its associated canals. Once an affected tooth's canals are satisfactorily cleansed and shaped, they are filled with materials intended to prevent pain and infection from recurring.
What are signs for root canal treatment?
Certain signs may signify that you have a diseased tooth or infected nerve and thus may need a root canal. These signs include:
A root canal is done in such cases to save the affected tooth and preserve its function.
Is it possible to get cured with medicines?
No, its not possible to get complete cure with medicine alone, your infection is not occurring every few years; it is a continuous, chronic infection, with periodic acute flare-ups. The problem with treating it only with medicines is twofold:
1. You never know when the next flare-up will be, or how severe it will be. A severe dentoalveolar abscess can land you in a hospital.
2. Chronic abscesses gradually destroy the root of a tooth and its supporting bone.
We can assure you that if medicines alone could successfully treat these infections, dentists would not go through the trouble of performing root canal treatment on their patients. If you want to keep your tooth in the long run, you will need to have root canal treatment.
Is there any other alternative than root canal treatment?
An infection originating in the pulp of teeth may be treated in one of three ways:
1. Root canal treatment
2. Endodontic surgery (apicectomy with retrograde apical filling)
3. Extraction
Depending on the presenting condition of the tooth in question, one or another of these approaches may be appropriate. Sometimes only one alternative is possible, which narrows the choice. Of the three techniques, the first two are an attempt to save the affected tooth; the extraction should be reserved as a last resort when salvage is not possible.
Is RCT treatment painful and requires many visits?
Because of the modern advances and expertise available with SDC, root canal treatment is a relatively simple method with little or no discomfort to the patient. In addition it is now possible to have a one sitting root canal treatment in the majority of cases. Whereas, some cases can require traditional approach of multi-visits (3-4).
